How to Prepare Your Puppy for Their First Grooming Session

By Jane Doe on April 22, 2024

A puppy's first grooming session is a crucial step in their development. A positive experience will set the stage for a lifetime of easy, stress-free grooming. Here’s how you can help prepare your little one for their big day.

1. Handle Them Often

Get your puppy used to being touched all over. Gently handle their paws, ears, tail, and mouth on a regular basis. This will make them more comfortable with the groomer's touch during the session. Make it a positive experience with treats and praise.

2. Introduce Brushing Early

Start a regular brushing routine at home, even if their coat doesn't seem to need it yet. Use a soft brush and keep sessions short and positive. This helps them get accustomed to the sensation of being groomed and helps prevent matting as their adult coat grows in.

3. Let Them Explore Grooming Tools

Allow your puppy to sniff and investigate brushes and combs (while supervised). You can also turn on a hairdryer on a low setting in the same room to get them used to the noise. This desensitization can make a big difference.

4. Keep it Positive

Your energy matters. If you're anxious about the grooming appointment, your puppy will pick up on it. Stay calm and speak in a happy, encouraging tone. When you drop them off or when the mobile groomer arrives, make the handoff quick and cheerful.

5. Choose the Right First Groom

A puppy's first groom should be simple and introductory. It's often called a "puppy trim" and might just include a light bath, brush-out, nail trim, and slight trimming around the face and paws. The goal is positive exposure, not a perfect show cut. At Paw Perfect, our "Puppy's First Groom" service is designed specifically for this!
